Samsung is the first smartphone manufacturer on the market to release a device with a 5.3-inch screen but it seems that recently it has started thinking that 5.3 inches is a screen size that’s just not large enough. Maybe that’s the main reason why it has recently released a media player equipped with a 5.8-inch touchscreen that borrows some of the features of the Samsung Galaxy S III.
So, if you didn’t think that Samsung is able to release on the market a device with a screen even larger than that of the Note that’s not advertised as a tablet, you were wrong. It’s time for the Galaxy lineup to also include a 5.8-inch device, the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8. The device was officially announced via a press release that was posted on the Samsung Tomorrow blog. So, if you are interested in a touchscreen music player, this is one of the latest options that you should consider.
Samsung Launches 5.8-inch Device
This new Galaxy device is equipped with a 5.8-inch touchscreen that supports a maximum resolution of 960 x 540 pixels and is integrated in a chassis that looks similar to that of the Galaxy S III. The main difference is that this time the focus is on the touchscreen but also on a pair of stereo speakers that are placed at the top and the bottom of the front face of the device in order to make available its music player capabilities. In addition, because the screen is larger than that of the Galaxy S III, the overall design is also larger. That means you will have to deal with a device that measures 165 x 85 x 10.8mm instead of 136 x 70 x 8.6mm. So, this Galaxy Player is definitely not the type of device that you can carry inside a pocket.
What I can also tell you about this recent Samsung release is that it uses Android 4.0 as operating system and it benefits from the special features made available by the TouchWiz UI. In addition, it’s available in a 16GB as well as in a 32GB version and makes available in both cases the possibility to expand the storage area by using microSD cards of up to 32GB. What I must also add is that you will also benefit from the presence of a large 2,500mAh battery and from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity. Also available is a front-facing camera, perfect for video calls. What’s not known yet is what processor is hidden inside the chassis. We all hope that it’s the Exynos 4 Quad processor paired with a generous amount of RAM.
Details about the pricing and the availability of the device are expected to be made available soon, most likely during IFA 2012 where Samsung is expected to give a press conference. Considering that IFA 2012 is scheduled for the end of the week, you should expect details to be made available pretty soon. What I must also add is that this Galaxy Player 5.8 is not the first Galaxy Player to be made available on the market. This new device comes to join other four Galaxy Player version, each one with a different screen size and a different set of features.
